Uncovering an FSB Spy Embedded in the Ukrainian Military

The individual, a mobilized serviceman, was recruited by Russian intelligence prior to his conscription. After joining the military, he directed enemy fire against the motorized infantry brigade to which he was assigned.

The operative attempted to facilitate a Russian missile strike targeting his own repair battalion, responsible for restoring drone systems. To prepare this attack, he relayed exact coordinates of the battalion's location to his FSB handlers. Before the strike, he planned to leave the military site, citing a hospital visit as a pretext. His arrest occurred while he was in a service vehicle leaving the base.

Recruitment Tactics and Legal Consequences

Russian intelligence leveraged a relative living in Russia to recruit the agent into collaboration. Following mobilization, he served as an electrician repairing drone systems and collected intelligence on the deployment of his own unit and neighboring Ukrainian forces for the FSB. Authorities seized five smartphones during searches, which were used for encrypted communications with Russian handlers.

The suspect faces charges under Part 2 of Article 111 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code-high treason committed during martial law. He is currently held without bail and faces life imprisonment plus asset confiscation if found guilty.

This case is part of a broader pattern. Previously, the SBU, with the Armed Forces’ leadership, apprehended another mobilized serviceman in the Mykolaiv region suspected of directing Russian strikes against southern Ukraine. Ukrainian counterintelligence also thwarted a terrorist attack in Poltava by detaining an FSB agent plotting to assassinate a military commander. Additionally, in Kyiv, a man suspected of working for the FSB and coordinating missile and drone attacks on the capital was arrested.

The exposure of an FSB operative within Ukraine’s military highlights the persistent threat posed by enemy intelligence during the ongoing conflict. Identifying and neutralizing such infiltrators is vital to safeguarding Ukrainian troops and preventing further attacks from Russia.
