Студента затримано за підозрою в причетності до терористичного плану, що готувався на Полтавщині.

Poltava Attack Thwarted

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Counterintelligence from the Security Service of Ukraine has stopped a planned terrorist attack in Poltava. The arrest was made of a local university student recruited by Russian special services through Telegram. The suspect allegedly intended to assassinate the commander of a regional military unit with a homemade explosive device, and he had also agreed to torch a truck.

Details of the Criminal Scheme

The student came under the notice of Russian intelligence while looking for paid jobs in Telegram. Acting on orders from a handler in Russia, he produced a homemade explosive device and linked it to a mobile phone for remote activation. His assignment was to examine the commander's routine and routes in order to plant the bomb. He separately bought a flammable mixture and accepted the task of burning a truck.

The SBU caught the agent red-handed as he tried to set the vehicle on fire. A search led to the seizure of the IED that had been prepared for the attack, along with narcotics and a smartphone containing evidence. SBU investigators served the suspect with suspicion papers under several articles of Ukraine's Criminal Code. He is currently held in custody and may be sentenced to up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.

This incident points to the risks of Russian intelligence activities in Ukraine, especially the use of social media to involve young people in terrorist plots. It also demonstrates the ongoing work of Ukrainian security agencies to prevent threats to national security and to protect military personnel from attacks. At the same time, it reinforces the need for digital caution and awareness of online recruitment schemes.
