Russian Agent Apprehended

According to Главком: The Ukrainian Security Service's (SBU) military counterintelligence unit has thwarted an assassination plot against the commander of the Third Army Corps. The SBU detained a drone operator, recruited by Russian special services, who was gathering targeting data for a precision missile and bomb strike. He also planned to disclose the location of his brigade's headquarters. This incident highlights the persistent threat of espionage and sabotage within Ukraine's military structure.

The suspect, who served in a brigade operating in the Kharkiv region, attempted to obtain information on the timing and location of a Ukrainian general's arrival at his unit's positions. To collect intelligence, the agent exploited his access to official information and covertly questioned colleagues about classified details. Simultaneously, he intended to provide Russian forces with the coordinates of his brigade's headquarters and training center, which the enemy had planned to target in a separate artillery strike.

Investigation and Consequences

SBU operatives uncovered the Russian agent during the initial phase of his espionage activities. He was detained within his garrison, where a smartphone used to communicate with the occupiers was confiscated. According to the investigation, the individual was recruited by Russian intelligence through his ex-wife, who resides in the temporarily occupied territory of Zaporizhzhia Oblast and works for the Russian Federation. To conceal his communications with the enemy, the agent regularly deleted messages from their correspondence.

SBU investigators have formally notified the suspect of charges under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code (high treason committed under martial law). The accused is now in custody and faces a potential sentence of life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

This case demonstrates the active efforts of Ukrainian special services to counter enemy attempts to destabilize the military command structure during the ongoing war. The agent's capture at an early stage underscores the critical importance of counterintelligence and operational security in a conflict zone. Such SBU operations are vital not only for identifying threats but also for preventing potential attacks on key Ukrainian military assets and personnel.
