SBU detains Russian agent for plotting murder
Служба безпеки України затримала громадянина РФ, який планував вбивство українського військового керівника Андрія Юсова.

Arrest of a Mercenary Hired by Russian Intelligence

According to Главком: Ukrainian law enforcement uncovered and detained a mercenary working for Russian intelligence services who was planning to assassinate Andrii Yusov, an official from the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine (GUR). According to reports, the suspect was promised $100,000 for eliminating the GUR representative, with $10,000 already paid as an advance. At the time of arrest, the mercenary was taken into custody.

Investigators say Russian intelligence recruited a 38-year-old Kyiv resident who had a prior criminal record for property crimes. The individual studied the official’s travel routes, daily schedule, residence, vehicles, and surrounding infrastructure.

“To carry out the criminal plan, he meticulously examined the official’s travel routes, daily schedule, residence, vehicles, and nearby infrastructure. After gathering the necessary information, the suspect decided to use an FPV drone for the attack and began searching for someone with the skills to operate such unmanned aerial vehicles,” the National Police stated.

Authorities arrested the suspect before the plan could be executed. A search of his property uncovered mobile phones, a GPS tracker, a car, and other physical evidence. The detainee has been charged under Article 14, Part 1, and Article 115, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (preparation for premeditated murder for financial gain). This charge carries a penalty of 10 to 15 years in prison or life imprisonment.

Threats Against Officials

In February, Andrii Yusov confirmed he was the target of a series of Russia-ordered assassination plots that were foiled by Ukrainian and Moldovan security services. This case highlights the severe risks faced by high-ranking officials amid the current geopolitical climate.

The capture of this mercenary and the exposure of his plans demonstrate an intensification of Ukrainian law enforcement efforts to combat contract killings sponsored by Russian intelligence. It also underscores the critical importance of security for officials involved in state affairs, especially under growing pressure from external aggressors. Law enforcement agencies continue to focus on preventing such crimes and protecting public servants from potential threats.

The recent arrest underscores the ongoing threats faced by Ukrainian officials, particularly in light of previous incidents involving Russian agents. Notably, in a related case, three Russian operatives were apprehended for inciting missile strikes on Kyiv, reflecting a broader pattern of aggression from Russian intelligence. This highlights the critical need for vigilance in ensuring the safety of key figures amidst escalating tensions.
