Ukraine Detains Russian GRU Agent Spying on Defense Factories in Zakarpattia
Russian Military Intelligence Agent Apprehended
According to Главком: Counterintelligence officers from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) have detained a Russian GRU agent in the Zakarpattia region who was employed at a local factory. The individual was reportedly gathering intelligence on enterprises fulfilling defense contracts in western Ukraine. He collected details such as company addresses, types and volumes of production, as well as personal data on employees and specifics of their work schedules.
The SBU stated that Russia's GRU intended to use this information to prepare airstrikes on Ukrainian defense industry plants and to carry out terrorist acts against officials, particularly engineering developers. To complete his mission, the agent covertly extracted intelligence from former colleagues currently working at various Ukrainian defense enterprises.
“In these conversations, the suspect typically posed as someone seeking to adopt best practices and showed professional interest, especially in the latest defense developments and the specialists involved,” the SBU reported.
The agent transmitted collected data through his father, who resides in Kaliningrad and collaborates with Russian intelligence. He also planned to secure a job at another defense facility to gather more information for the aggressor nation. The SBU prevented his employment at another defense industry site and safeguarded the locations of Ukraine's defense assets.
Special Operation and Informant Uncovered
In the final phase of the operation, the agent was arrested at his residence. During a search, authorities found mobile phones containing evidence of his work for the enemy, along with seized weapons and ammunition, whose origins are currently under investigation. SBU investigators have charged him under Article 111, Part 2 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code (high treason under martial law), which carries a potential life sentence with confiscation of property.
Additionally, military counterintelligence of the SBU exposed a Russian informant in Poltava who was tracking coordinates of Ukrainian defense forces for missile and drone strikes. The informant, an unemployed local, was seeking quick income through Telegram channels.
These incidents highlight the increasing activity of Russian special services within Ukraine and underscore the critical role of counterintelligence measures by Ukrainian authorities. The detentions reflect a vigilant monitoring of threats to national security and the necessity of protecting strategic sites from potential attacks. Amid the ongoing war, such actions are vital for maintaining security and stability in the region.
In light of recent events, it is crucial to acknowledge the ongoing efforts of the Security Service of Ukraine in uncovering threats to national security.
