Ukrainian Railways Employee Arrested on Espionage Charges

According to Главком: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has apprehended a 33-year-old employee of Ukrainian Railways in the Donetsk region, accusing him of spying for the Russian Federation. The suspect is charged with the unauthorized dissemination of sensitive information regarding the Ukrainian Armed Forces. SBU counterintelligence discovered that the individual was tracking the locations of heavy military equipment belonging to the Defense Forces and relaying this intelligence to a contact linked to Russian special services.

Investigators report that the man used his off-duty hours to patrol a frontline community, identifying the coordinates of military installations. He compiled this data on his personal smartphone, which provided key evidence of his espionage activities. During a search, authorities seized his mobile phone, which is believed to contain information of significant interest to Russian intelligence.

Legal Consequences and Security Implications

The SBU has formally notified the suspect of the charges under Part 2 of Article 114-2 of Ukraine's Criminal Code. He is currently in custody and faces a potential prison sentence of up to eight years. This arrest was part of a broader security operation on the Kramatorsk front, which also led to the detention of an FSB agent in Khmelnytskyi. This operation highlights the ongoing threat of espionage within Ukraine's critical infrastructure sectors, which have been frequent targets since the full-scale invasion began.

This case underscores the persistent efforts of Ukrainian law enforcement to counter espionage activities that pose a direct threat to national security.

The arrest of an employee from a vital state enterprise like Ukrainian Railways points to the serious risks of sensitive information leaking to hostile nations. The SBU continues its systematic work to identify and neutralize such threats in the context of the ongoing war. Maintaining public vigilance and awareness of security risks remains crucial for the country's defense.
