Russian Mercenary Cell Neutralized

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has foiled a Russian mercenary group that was plotting a series of assassinations against Ukrainian military personnel, intelligence officers, and media representatives. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this development in his address marking the 1459th day of the war. The operation was conducted jointly by the SBU, the National Police, and the Office of the Prosecutor General.

Details of the operation were provided by Oleksandr Poklad. President Zelenskyy emphasized the significance of this action, stating,

"We have successfully neutralized Russian mercenaries who were preparing attacks on our citizens. This is yet another front in the constant defense of Ukraine's security."

The Ukrainian president stressed that the threat was directed at Ukrainian soldiers, intelligence operatives, and journalists. This incident underscores the persistent hybrid warfare tactics employed by Russia, which extend beyond the front lines.

International Policy and Sanctions

On the international front, Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The discussions focused on preparations for the next round of negotiations. The president noted that the previous meeting in Geneva demonstrated to the American side that the Russian position is blocking any progress.

Furthermore, Ukraine has imposed sanctions on 225 ship captains involved in transporting Russian oil. Kyiv is urging the European Union to include a ban on maritime services for vessels used by Russia in its next sanctions package.

"It is worth Europe coming to this. And this could be a significant incentive from Europe for Russia to finally move from war to diplomacy,"

Zelenskyy remarked. These sanctions are part of a broader strategy to economically pressure the Kremlin and limit its ability to fund the war.

The neutralization of the Russian mercenaries highlights the intensification of security measures in Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian aggression. This operation demonstrates the critical need to counter threats not only to military personnel but also to civilians, particularly journalists who can become targets in wartime. Ukraine's steps to sanction ship captains carrying Russian oil also reflect Kyiv's drive to increase international pressure on Moscow and secure support from Western partners. The evolution of these events could significantly impact future negotiations and diplomatic efforts in the conflict.
