Despite Being Landlocked, Serbia Ranks Among the World's Top Ten Fastest-Growing Tourist Destinations

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Serbia has secured a spot in the global top ten for tourism growth, even though it lacks a coastline. In the first five months of this year, tourist arrivals jumped by 6.8–6.9% compared to the same period last year. The largest numbers of international visitors come from Turkey, Russia, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Slovenia. Meanwhile, arrivals from China have declined. This landlocked Balkan country, often overlooked by travelers, is now drawing attention for its cultural and natural offerings.

Rural Tourism and Culinary Opportunities

Rural tourism is also booming. The number of registered farm-stay accommodations has surged from about 700 to roughly 1,900 over the past three years. Industry representative Huseyin Memic explained:

'Approximately 700 registered rural tourism farms existed three years ago; today, that figure has climbed to around 1,900. Our aim is to highlight Serbia's villages and lengthen the tourist season.' - Huseyin Memic

Among the most promising seasonal destinations are Golubac and the Danube region, which attract visitors with their natural beauty and cultural heritage. Infrastructure projects in Pešter and Novi Pazar are also boosting the area's appeal and accessibility.

Further cementing Serbia's tourism credentials, several Belgrade establishments have been included in the 2026 Michelin Guide, underscoring the country's rising culinary standards. Memic added:

'In the first five months, we recorded an increase of between 6.8% and 6.9% in both domestic and international visitor numbers.' - Huseyin Memic

This growth reflects a successful tourism strategy centered on infrastructure investment, rural tourism promotion, and gastronomy. It is creating jobs, enriching local communities, and strengthening Serbia's competitive position on the global travel map. The country's strong showing in international rankings opens up fresh opportunities to attract foreign investors and tourists alike.
