Rebrov Holds Strategic Meeting with Coaching Staff

According to Главком: Ukraine's head coach, Serhiy Rebrov, convened a meeting with the coaches of the nation's youth and junior national teams. Held at the Football House in Kyiv, the discussions centered on the broader development of football within the country and the specific preparation of young talents for upcoming international competitions.

Path to the 2026 World Cup Playoffs

The Ukrainian national team has successfully navigated the initial phase of the European qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across three nations in North America. Ukraine sealed this stage with a 2:0 victory over Iceland in Warsaw. The decisive goals came late in the second half, with Zubkov scoring in the 83rd minute and Hutsuliak securing the win in the third minute of added time.

This crucial win has propelled Ukraine into the playoff semi-finals, where they are scheduled to face Sweden on March 26, 2025. A victory there would set up a final playoff match against the winner of the Poland vs. Albania tie. This playoff route is a common feature of UEFA qualification, offering a second chance to reach the tournament. Concurrently, Ukraine's youth teams have been gaining valuable international experience:

  • The U-18 squad played two friendly matches against Italy in 2026;
  • The U-17 team participated in an international tournament in Croatia;
  • The U-16 side competed in a tournament held in Turkey.

These parallel activities highlight a concerted effort to strengthen Ukrainian football at both the senior and developmental levels.

The meeting with the coaches of our youth and junior teams underscores the necessity of a systematic approach to football development in Ukraine, particularly in preparing young players for the international stage. - Serhiy Rebrov

Advancing to the World Cup qualification playoff semi-final represents a significant achievement for Ukraine, one with the potential to boost the sport's popularity and inspire greater youth participation nationwide. The active involvement of youth teams on the international circuit further demonstrates the country's ongoing commitment to nurturing the next generation of football talent.
