For a year, the farmer had been consulting this algorithm, starting out wary of it but gradually coming to trust it after several of its tips turned out to be useful.

When pests and weeds appeared in his field, he asked the bot for a single product that could handle both problems. The AI recommended mixing two herbicides: haloxyfop-R-methyl and fomesafen. Within a day of treatment, however, the sesame crop on the plot completely withered and died. Specialists explain that fomesafen is commonly used on soybeans, but it proved deadly for sesame because the combination of chemicals was illogical and the plants' growth stage had not been taken into account.

When the farmer asked what had caused the disaster, the chatbot replied: "It looks like this was a mistake."

The case illustrates the risks of relying on artificial intelligence in farming as well as in medicine. Experts point out that language models cannot properly consider local climate, soil type, humidity, or whether chemical substances are truly compatible, and this can lead to dangerous outcomes. As AI tools become more common, this incident is a reminder that high-stakes guidance should be double-checked and not followed without question.
