Tensions Rise Between Ukraine and Poland

According to Главком: Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has addressed the growing friction with Poland following the decision to honor a Ukrainian Special Operations Forces unit with the name "Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA)." Sybiha emphasized that this escalation benefits neither Ukrainians nor Poles, urging both sides to pursue dialogue and strengthen bilateral ties. He noted that significant progress has been made over the past two years to rebuild a constructive partnership.

Polish Response and Historical Sensitivity

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has indicated a willingness to consider stripping Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle. This proposal has been submitted for inclusion on the agenda of the order’s chapter meeting scheduled for June 8. It is important to note that no official decision regarding the revocation of Zelenskyy’s award has been made by Polish authorities yet.

The honorary designation was granted to the Separate Center for Special Operations "North" via Ukrainian Presidential Decree No. 440/2026. This move was aimed at restoring historical traditions within the national armed forces and recognizing the unit’s exemplary combat performance. Sybiha stressed that the decision to adopt the name came from the servicemembers themselves, who did not intend any anti-Polish message.

These events highlight how sensitive historical issues can influence the political climate and cooperation between Ukraine and Poland. Despite the tension, both sides have expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue, signaling a shared desire to maintain their partnership amid ongoing challenges.
