Ukraine's Drone Forces Aim to Cut Off Crimea in the Near Future
Plans to Isolate Crimea and the Impact of Drone Strikes
According to ХВИЛЯ: Robert Brovdi, commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has announced intentions to isolate Crimea in the coming period. According to him, Ukrainian forces will create conditions that make it difficult for military personnel and defense industry workers to remain in temporarily occupied territories and will block access routes to these areas. This strategy reflects a broader push to leverage drone technology to disrupt Russian logistics and operations in the region.
'It’s as easy as shooting partridges in an open field' - Robert Brovdi
Over the past month, drone strikes have reduced traffic on the Novorossiya highway by more than two-thirds. Since Brovdi took command of the Unmanned Systems Forces, the number of medium-range combat sorties has increased 28-fold, while deep strikes into Russian territory have nearly quadrupled. During the first five months of 2026, Ukrainian drones eliminated over 50,900 Russian troops and destroyed 174 air defense systems, valued at approximately $5.4 billion.
The average number of soldiers eliminated per day stands at 337, with the number of targets hit reaching 1,169. Notably, unmanned systems units make up only 2.5% of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, yet they account for roughly one-third of Russian losses over the past 12 months. Brovdi aims to expand these units to 5% of the army.
Recognition of Drone Strike Effectiveness
Vladimir Putin has acknowledged that Ukrainian drone attacks are causing damage, and last month, occupation authorities in Crimea introduced fuel rationing. The Russian Rubicon unit is actively trying to counter Ukraine’s advantage in medium-range drones. Brovdi also noted:
'We are opening doors to vast spaces where the pain of war, felt in almost every Ukrainian city, must also be felt, particularly in the consciousness of the residents' - Robert Brovdi
These figures highlight the significant impact of unmanned systems on the course of military operations and underscore their growing importance in modern warfare. The increased effectiveness of drone strikes and the depletion of enemy resources could substantially alter the strategic situation in the region, offering Ukraine new opportunities to achieve its military objectives. Moving forward, Russia’s responses to these challenges will be critical, potentially leading to new phases of escalation in the conflict.
As Ukraine intensifies its drone operations, the effectiveness of these strikes has raised concerns within Russian military ranks. Recent statements from Russian officials, including Dmitry Rogozin, have acknowledged the failures in their air defense systems against Ukrainian assaults that reach deep into Russian territory.
