According to ХВИЛЯ: On October 8, 2023, Ukrainian defense forces targeted the Gazprom Neftkhim Salavat oil refining complex located in Salavat city, Bashkortostan. The strike ignited a fire within the facility. This refinery stands as one of Russia's largest oil processing and petrochemical plants, with an annual capacity to handle up to 10 million tons of hydrocarbon raw materials. It produces essential fuels such as automotive gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, bitumen, polyethylene, and other petrochemical products that support the Russian military's operations.
Ukraine's Military Objectives
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine emphasized that attacks on infrastructure like this aim to diminish Russia's military-economic capabilities.
“Striking such facilities of the Russian aggressor is Ukraine exercising its inherent right to self-defense in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter,” the General Staff stated.
They also warned:
