The hardest hit is Astypalaia, located in the southeastern Aegean Sea, which receives only 2.5 centimeters of rainfall annually. A reservoir in the agricultural Livadi Valley is experiencing extreme drought, impacting water availability for both residents and tourists.

Water-Saving Measures Implemented

To conserve water, some hotels on the islands have introduced special initiatives. For instance, hotel owner Maria Alkalay noted:

“Guests have embraced this with enthusiasm”

by offering €5 vouchers to those who skip daily housekeeping. Elsewhere, hotels are filling their pools with seawater instead of fresh water, while local authorities are imposing limits on non-essential water use. During peak evening hours, water pressure may drop, further complicating the situation.

Travel insurance expert Nick Parkhouse from Go.Compare commented:

“Water shortages in Greece shouldn't automatically deter travelers, but it's a reminder to check both local travel advisories and your insurance policy before heading out.”

He also pointed out that most travel insurance policies do not cover trip cancellations linked to water shortages. Coverage may apply if the UK Foreign Office advises against travel, but only if the policy was purchased before the water shortage became widely known.

Athens' National Center for Scientific Research Demokritos has warned that drought conditions could worsen by 2049. Amid this situation, interest in travel to Cape Verde has surged, with search queries for trips there rising by 265%. Cape Verde consists of 10 volcanic islands with a total population of 491,233. The archipelago gained attention following its performance at the FIFA World Cup, further boosting tourism demand.
