Happy Heart Syndrome Lands Woman in Hospital After Her Daughter's Wedding
Happy Heart Syndrome: A Mother Hospitalized Following Her Daughter's Wedding
According to НВ — Техно: Three days after her daughter's wedding, a 65-year-old woman arrived at the hospital complaining of chest pain and shortness of breath. Doctors initially suspected a heart attack, but further testing revealed that her condition was actually caused by 'happy heart syndrome'-also known as takotsubo cardiomyopathy-triggered by overwhelming positive emotions.
Medical exams showed signs of reduced blood flow to the heart, but no clot was found, which is typically the cause of a heart attack. The patient also had an altered shape in her heart's left ventricle. Happy heart syndrome can result from both intensely positive experiences and powerful negative ones-the latter being referred to as 'broken heart syndrome.' Both conditions can mimic a heart attack, and about 1–3% of patients suspected of having a heart attack but lacking a clot are diagnosed with takotsubo syndrome.
How Emotions Affect Physical Health
Only about 4% of all documented takotsubo syndrome cases are linked to positive emotions. The exact biological mechanism behind this condition is still unknown. In this case, however, the woman made a full recovery, showing that recovery from this syndrome is possible.
This case serves as a reminder that even strong positive emotions can have a real physiological impact on the body-something worth keeping in mind when planning major life events. Happy heart syndrome highlights the importance of paying close attention to your health during emotionally charged moments, whether those emotions are uplifting or distressing.
