According to Главком: Syria has introduced new banknotes that will replace the bills featuring the images of Bashar al-Assad. The presentation of the new money took place on December 29, and the new banknotes will enter circulation on January 1. The new banknotes come in denominations from 10 to 500 Syrian pounds and feature images of agricultural symbols, such as:

• roses
• wheat
• olives
• oranges

It is important to note that the currency has been redenominated, resulting in the removal of two zeros. The Syrian pound has fallen significantly since 2011, with its exchange rate dropping from 50 to about 11 thousand to the dollar. These changes indicate serious economic challenges facing the country.

Symbolism of the new currency

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa noted that the new currency symbolizes the end of the previous phase and the beginning of a new one, which the Syrian people aspire to. It is also worth mentioning that on December 9, Syria celebrated the first anniversary of the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, highlighting the significance of these changes in the context of the country's economic and political situation.

The introduction of new banknotes may be an attempt by the government to restore public trust in the national currency and stabilize the economy, which has faced serious difficulties due to the prolonged war and sanctions. The images of agricultural symbols on the banknotes may also reflect a desire to emphasize traditional sectors of the economy, such as agriculture, which could become the foundation for the country's recovery in the future.
