G20 Summit Cancels Traditional Group Photo After One-Third of Nations Refuse to Pose with Lavrov
Лідери країн G20 відмовились від звичної спільної фотографії через конфліктні обставини з представником Росії.

G20 Summit Abandons Group Photo Following Boycott of Russian Foreign Minister

According to Рубрика — Політика: At the recent G20 summit, organizers decided to cancel the customary group photograph after nearly one-third of participating countries declined to be photographed alongside Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. This move reflects escalating international tensions, largely driven by Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

German Foreign Minister Johan Wadephul emphasized the point by stating,

“There will absolutely be no group photo featuring European partners together with Mr. Lavrov, as our relations with Russia are far from normal.”

Similar sentiments were echoed by other summit attendees:

  • UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband remarked,
“We have not maintained such relations with Russia for several years now.”
  • Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong supported the decision to forego the joint photo, condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also chose not to participate in the group photo, signaling America’s firm stance on Russia’s role in global diplomacy. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski noted, “Wars are ongoing, and some participants at this table are involved in those conflicts, making consensus extremely difficult.”

Discussion of the Ukraine Crisis at the Summit

The summit also focused heavily on the crisis in Ukraine. European External Action Service chief Kaja Kallas reported that July, August, and September of 2026 were the deadliest months for civilians in Ukraine. She further accused Lavrov of spreading misinformation and distorting facts during their meetings.

Notably, Ukraine was not invited to the 2026 G20 summit despite previous invitations extended to Ukrainian representatives. US officials explained Ukraine’s exclusion by emphasizing the intent to keep the summit limited to full G20 members. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his willingness to attend the Miami summit and meet with Vladimir Putin if the Russian president participates.

These developments-the refusal to appear alongside Lavrov in a group photo and Ukraine’s absence from the next summit-highlight the deep divisions and ongoing strains in international relations.

The decision by numerous countries to boycott the photo with Lavrov underscores Russia's growing diplomatic isolation due to its actions in Ukraine. This incident illustrates how political stances and diplomatic choices can influence symbolic gestures, revealing broader fractures within the global community. Ukraine’s exclusion further signals that security and stability in Eastern Europe remain pressing concerns for the international order.

The international landscape remains tense as discussions continue around Russia's involvement in global affairs. In light of this, Putin has proposed a summit in November with key leaders, notably excluding Ukraine’s President Zelensky. This development highlights the shifting alliances and ongoing geopolitical challenges faced by nations amidst the crisis in Ukraine.
