According to Главком: Following a drone incident on April 1st, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini is urging lawmakers to grant the military expanded powers. The call comes after three Russian drones struck the Ukrainian city of Perechyn, located roughly 10 kilometers from the Slovak border, damaging energy infrastructure in Ukraine's Zakarpattia region and leaving several settlements without power. This event highlights the direct security spillover from the war in Ukraine onto NATO's eastern flank.

Pellegrini argued that current legislation lacks a middle ground between peace and war, hindering the army's ability to act.

"Today, Slovakia only recognizes a state of peace or a state of war. There is nothing in between," the President stated. "Our military faces a problem because, in peacetime, they cannot effectively take all preventive measures that would allow for the safe resolution of incidents such as the potential crash of a stray drone or other equipment onto our territory."

Planned Legislative Revisions

Legislative changes are now anticipated to give the army greater authority to implement defensive measures within the nation's airspace. A roundtable discussion involving military officials and politicians, including opposition representatives, is scheduled for next week.

"I am firmly convinced that after this meeting, this issue will cease to be a subject of confrontation between the opposition and the coalition and will become a common task for all responsible politicians aimed at ensuring the security of Slovak citizens," Pellegrini emphasized.
