Doubts About Ukraine's NATO Membership

According to Главком: Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kalinak expressed doubts about Ukraine's prospects of joining NATO and the European Union, stating that Ukraine will never become a member of the Alliance. According to him, the countries that support Ukraine do not provide it with military assistance, which raises questions about its integration into NATO. Kalinak directly asked:

“Has it sent any soldiers? No, it hasn’t. Of course not.” - Robert Kalinak

Ukraine's Response and NATO Member States' Positions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized in response that the question of Ukraine's NATO membership depends solely on the member countries of the Alliance. This statement reflects the complex situation in which Ukraine is trying to find support for its Euro-Atlantic course. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also confirmed that some member countries are against Ukraine's membership in the Alliance. Among them, he highlighted:

  • Hungary
  • Slovakia
  • The United States

Thus, despite Ukraine's efforts, there are significant obstacles to its integration into NATO, particularly the positions of some countries that are not ready to agree to its membership. This situation leaves the question of Ukraine's future in NATO open.

Robert Kalinak's statements underscore the existing contradictions in attitudes towards Ukraine's NATO membership among the Alliance's countries. Slovakia's position, along with other countries that oppose membership, creates additional challenges for Ukraine in its pursuit of Euro-Atlantic integration. This indicates that issues of security and support for Ukraine remain important topics on the international stage, requiring active diplomatic efforts from the Ukrainian government.
