According to НВ — Техно: In an era when accessory brands increasingly stage extreme stunts to prove durability, case-maker RHINOSHIELD and aerospace firm Sent Into Space pulled off a daring feat on August 28, 2023, at 18:34. A smartphone tucked inside an AirX case was released from the stratosphere above northern Sweden, with no parachute to slow its descent. The device tumbled 30,607 meters (100,418 feet) near Kiruna and, according to Guinness World Records, touched down completely intact.

Before the drop, the team tested the case under subzero temperatures and low-pressure conditions, accounting for every conceivable risk. A balloon carried the phone high into the sky and let it go over an uninhabited stretch of northern Sweden. Under Guinness rules, the phone had to fall without a parachute, and the case itself had to be the very first part to strike the ground.

The Record and Why It Matters

Engineers had narrowed the landing zone to roughly two kilometers, yet it still took the recovery team over five hours to find the device. When they did, the phone showed no visible damage. The height of the fall was more than three times the cruising altitude of a typical commercial airliner.

The AirX case is molded from a single material that combines shock absorption with recyclability, unlike conventional cases that rely on mixed plastics and rubber. The whole concept came about after RHINOSHIELD launched its AirX product line. Previously, American Ishan Khadkar earned a Guinness title for solving two Rubik's Cubes while parachuting; now this new record stands as the highest drop of a mobile phone in a case onto natural terrain, adding another highlight to the achievements of RHINOSHIELD and Sent Into Space.
