Doctor Faces Charges After Anesthesia Error Leads to Patient Death During Surgery

Investigation into the Death of a 28-Year-Old Woman

According to Главком: Kyiv police have concluded their investigation into the death of a 28-year-old woman who died during a plastic surgery procedure at a private clinic in August 2023. The patient was undergoing a buttock implant surgery when she suffered cardiac arrest. Authorities determined this was a direct result of an improperly prepared anesthetic solution.

Despite resuscitation efforts, the patient could not be saved. A forensic medical examination revealed the anesthetic solution contained three times the permissible dose of the drug, a critical error during the procedure. Furthermore, the doctor failed to record the drug in the patient's medical documentation, violating professional standards.

Legal Repercussions

Following the investigation, a 50-year-old doctor has been formally notified of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, pertaining to the improper performance of professional duties. This charge carries a maximum penalty of up to two years' imprisonment. This case highlights ongoing concerns about patient safety in private medical settings, particularly in elective cosmetic procedures. The incident has drawn serious attention to safety protocols during medical procedures and the accountability of healthcare professionals.
