Recycling Plant Faces Existential Threat

According to ХВИЛЯ: In a recent interview, Yevhen Barakh, the owner of a waste recycling plant, revealed that his business is facing severe financial difficulties due to a decision by the local authorities. According to Barakh, the city tripled the fee for waste disposal at the end of the year, while the tariff for processing waste remained unchanged at 22 UAH. This disparity has pushed the plant to the brink of closure. Such pricing conflicts between municipalities and recycling operators are not uncommon in regions transitioning their waste management systems.

Yevhen Barakh stated that the responsibility for paying the new tariffs was placed on his enterprise without any corresponding adjustment to the processing fee.

He further emphasized that valuable raw materials constitute only 5-7% of the total waste stream. This means the revenue from selling these recovered materials amounts to a mere 800,000 - 900,000 UAH per month. Meanwhile, the plant's monthly operating budget is approximately 7 million UAH.

A Critical Situation

Barakh described the current situation as critical, stressing that his enterprise's very survival is now in question. With costs having surged and income remaining static, the future of the recycling plant is highly uncertain.

The plant's crisis reflects broader issues in local waste management governance. The sharp increase in landfill fees without a corresponding adjustment for recycling tariffs suggests a potential lack of constructive dialogue between businesses and government bodies.

If a solution to stabilize the plant's finances is not found, it could lead to serious environmental consequences, including a reduction in recycled waste and a corresponding increase in landfill volume.
