A direct night train from Scotland to Europe? New study eyes Channel Tunnel route

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Transport Scotland has launched an investigation into the possibility of extending the Caledonian Sleeper from Scotland to mainland Europe via the Eurotunnel. A working group formed to produce a technical and economic feasibility assessment has already met for the first time. It includes representatives from Transport Scotland, Scottish Rail Holdings, and Caledonian Sleeper. The review stems from the Scottish government's election programme, under which the SNP promised to look into a rail connection with Europe as a way of lessening the need for flights.

The Caledonian Sleeper currently runs six nights a week in both directions on five routes, serving Aberdeen, Inverness, Fort William, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London, with additional stops at Dundee, Perth, Gleneagles, and Carlisle. The study examines taking the service through the Channel Tunnel, the passage already used by Eurostar high-speed trains from London to Paris and other European cities. Stephen Flynn, Scotland's Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Transport, confirmed that the work is now under way and that findings are due to be presented to the Scottish government before the end of this year.

Transport innovation beyond the tracks

For travellers who would otherwise change trains in London or fly, a direct overnight service to the continent would offer a more straightforward option. In the meantime, the aviation sector is also pushing new ideas. The JetZero Z4 airliner, scheduled for a 2030 launch, is designed without windows and has secured a $3 billion loan to build its first factory. Its blended-wing body merges wings and fuselage into one lifting surface, which is expected to reduce fuel use, potentially lowering emissions and ticket prices.

These efforts could significantly alter Scotland's transport infrastructure and its connections with Europe, creating fresh travel possibilities while shrinking the environmental footprint. A direct rail link between Scotland and mainland Europe would mark a major move towards greener transport in the region, while the Z4 shows how innovation in aviation could also produce positive ecological benefits.
