Remarks by Włodzimierz Czarzasty on Ukraine’s Independence

According to Главком: Poland’s Sejm Speaker, Włodzimierz Czarzasty, has stated that Ukraine’s sovereignty and its path toward European Union membership represent a core, existential interest for Poland. He urged a rational approach to bilateral relations amid a rise in radical rhetoric. Czarzasty warned that if Ukraine were to collapse under Russian pressure, the Kremlin would not stop there-making Baltic states or even Poland itself the next potential targets of aggression.

Comments on Ukrainian-Polish Relations

Czarzasty also addressed the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after the ‘Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).’ He expressed regret over Poland’s reaction to this decision. In response, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi noted that over the past eighteen months, Ukraine and Poland have resumed a historians’ congress and the process of search and exhumation, reflecting a mutual effort to reach understanding between the two nations.

Regarding the potential revocation of the Order of the White Eagle from Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Czarzasty cautioned against hasty decisions. Polish President Karol Nawrocki had raised the possibility of reviewing this matter, emphasizing that the Order of the White Eagle is Poland’s highest state honor.

‘There can be no free Poland without a free Ukraine. This statement may not please everyone, but it is true,’ said Włodzimierz Czarzasty.

Poland’s foremost priority is preserving Ukraine’s independence and ensuring its full membership in the European Union, which Warsaw views as an existential national interest.

Czarzasty’s remarks highlight Poland’s deep concerns over regional security as Russian aggression escalates. Supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and its integration into European structures is not merely a matter of bilateral ties-it is a critical pillar of stability across Central and Eastern Europe. Even amid historical disagreements, mutual understanding between Ukraine and Poland remains essential for both countries under current circumstances.

As the dialogue between Poland and Ukraine evolves, the implications of recent statements by Polish officials become increasingly significant. In light of Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry's response to Poland's proposal regarding Zelenskyy, it is evident that both nations are navigating complex historical and political landscapes while striving for mutual understanding amidst regional tensions.
