Spotify's New AI Announcement

According to НВ — Техно: At 11:00 on August 5, Spotify officially announced a new artificial intelligence tool. The feature allows audiences to produce covers and remixes of songs, but only when the performers have given their consent. The company stresses that it wants to work with genuine artists - never fabricated personas - and that participation is entirely voluntary.

Gustav Söderström, Spotify's co-CEO, put it plainly: 'Our approach is to collaborate with authentic musicians, not to manufacture imaginary acts.'

Merlin, a rights agency representing more than 30,000 independent labels and distributors, has already joined the project. Spotify had previously struck a partnership with Universal Music Group as well. According to TechCrunch, the project was mentioned during Spotify's second-quarter earnings call, signaling how seriously the company is pursuing new music content.

Another co-CEO, Alex Norström, added that Spotify will use only recordings for which artists have granted permission. Participating artists will receive:

  • Credit for their work;
  • Payment for the use of their music.

Norström stressed the importance of fair treatment, noting that 'they will be credited and paid whenever their music is used.'

Testing Phase and Industry Implications

Initially, the tool will only be available to a small group of users in a test format. Spotify hasn't set a specific launch date, but the AI covers and remixes will be offered as a paid add-on to subscriptions. Another notable detail: the feature won't require Spotify to have a full music catalog before it can operate, which could make deployment faster. Company representatives say the tool will generate an additional revenue stream for participating artists.

This move could significantly reshape the music industry. It gives artists greater control over how their work is used and ensures they're compensated. In a market where streaming services face fierce competition, introducing creative, artist-friendly features may be key to both winning new subscribers and retaining existing ones. The collaboration with independent labels also highlights Spotify's commitment to musical diversity and innovation. The announcement lands as the music industry grapples with how to handle AI-generated content responsibly.
