Investigation into the Murder of Andrii Parubii
According to Главком: The investigation into the murder of Ukrainian Member of Parliament and former Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Andrii Parubii, has concluded. A 53-year-old suspect, who investigators allege acted as an agent for Russian special services, has now been formally indicted and his case sent to court. The charges against him include:
- High treason
- Attempted assassination of a state official
- Public incitement to violently overthrow the constitutional order
- Illegal handling of weapons
- Glorification of the aggression of the Russian Federation
Circumstances of the Killing
Andrii Parubii was killed in Lviv on August 30, 2025. According to the investigation, the assailant fired eight shots from a pistol at close range. The suspect, a resident of Lviv, was detained in the Khmelnytskyi region during the night of September 1. Investigators established that since 2024, he had been passing information about Ukrainian Armed Forces units in Lviv to his handlers. It was he who reportedly proposed Andrii Parubii as a target for assassination.
Following instructions from a Russian handler, the suspect received a Makarov pistol with ammunition. After committing the crime, he attempted to destroy evidence; however, law enforcement discovered the weapon with a silencer in a forest. Forensic examinations confirmed the suspect's involvement in the murder. In mid-December of last year, Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) investigators gathered new evidence in the case, including the recovery of the pistol used to kill the politician.
The crimes listed in the indictment fall under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: Part 3 of Art. 109; Part 2 of Art. 111; Part 2 of Art. 27, Part 2 of Art. 28, Art. 112; Part 2 of Art. 27, Part 2 of Art. 28, Part 1 of Art. 263; Parts 1 and 3 of Art. 436-2. The trial could mark a significant step in investigating crimes targeting state officials in Ukraine. This case highlights the persistent threat of foreign-sponsored violence against Ukraine's political leadership, a tactic used to sow instability.
The Parubii case is of major significance for the security of politicians in Ukraine, especially amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. The murder of Parubii, who held key state positions, underscores the risks faced by Ukrainian public officials. The court proceedings are likely to draw attention to the activities of Russian special services on Ukrainian territory and their attempts to destabilize the country through violence against political figures.
