The USA issues an ultimatum to Europe: take on NATO defense by 2027
US Demands from Europe on Defense
According to ХВИЛЯ: The USA has called on Europe to take on the majority of NATO's conventional defense capabilities by 2027. This ultimatum was voiced during a meeting in Washington this week between Pentagon staff and European delegations. European officials consider this deadline unrealistic, and the USA may halt participation in some NATO defense coordination mechanisms if the demands are not met.
Defense Spending and EU Plans
The US demands regarding defense spending are linked to a study titled 'Europe's Choice'. According to estimates, supporting Ukraine will cost Europe between 606 and 972 billion dollars over the next four years, while strengthening NATO's eastern flank will cost 1.4-1.8 trillion dollars. In response to these challenges, a European Union defense fund worth 500 billion euros is planned to be created.
Additionally, the EU has adopted a 'White Paper' with a plan to achieve defense readiness by 2030. NATO members have also agreed to increase target defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product.
Christopher Landau: 'Allies 'obviously' must take responsibility for Europe's defense.'
In the face of rising security threats in Europe, particularly due to the conflict in Ukraine, the USA is trying to strengthen NATO's defense capabilities by placing greater responsibility on European allies. This also reflects a shift in US foreign policy, where there is an increasing demand for European countries to be more proactive in their defense, which could significantly impact future relations between the USA and Europe.
