The US delegation-which included Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff-met with Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Qatari officials described the negotiations as showing 'positive progress' and indicated Washington’s willingness to continue the dialogue. The Trump administration also confirmed the meetings were productive, with President Trump emphasizing that

“Iran must never, under any circumstances, obtain a nuclear weapon.”

Technical Talks and Key Issues

Vice President JD Vance noted that lower-level negotiators are currently engaged in technical discussions in Doha. The main topics under consideration include:

• ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz;
• Iran’s nuclear program.

Regional tensions have escalated following a recent Iranian drone strike on a commercial vessel, which triggered a series of retaliatory strikes between the US and Iran.

Ali Khamenei was killed in an airstrike early in the conflict, and funeral ceremonies in Iran are set to begin on July 4. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated that no further negotiation meetings with the US are planned in the coming days, stressing that Tehran is focused on implementing a memorandum of understanding. Lead Iranian negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also reported a preliminary agreement to establish a hotline aimed at preventing incidents in the Strait of Hormuz, though official Iranian sources have denied this.
