Negotiations between the US and Russia on Ukraine's security

According to Главком: The US and Russia are negotiating security guarantees for Ukraine, which could be formalized as an international treaty. As part of these discussions, the possibility of territorial concessions from Ukraine in exchange for lifting sanctions on Russia is being considered. Such security guarantees, if agreed upon, would need to be ratified by the US Congress.

It is worth noting that initially the US proposed these guarantees for only 15 years. This limitation could be an important factor in the negotiations, as the duration of the agreement may impact the dynamics of relations between the countries. The continuation of dialogue between the US and Russia has become particularly relevant, as a meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled for February 7.

Discussions in society

There is also ongoing discussion in society regarding the potential referendum. According to recent polls:

  • 44% of citizens support holding a referendum,
  • 35% are against it,
  • 21% have not yet determined their position.

These data indicate the ambiguous attitude of the population towards the idea of territorial compromises and the possible consequences for Ukraine's national security.

Negotiations between the US and Russia could become an important step towards stabilizing the situation in the region; however, their outcomes remain uncertain, and further actions depend on many factors, including the reaction of the international community and Ukraine's domestic policy.

These negotiations could have a significant impact on the geopolitical situation in Europe, as stability in Ukraine is critically important for the security of the entire region.

Given the discrepancies between the positions of the US, Russia, and Ukraine, the results could significantly alter the balance of power and spark new discussions among the Ukrainian population regarding territorial compromises and their implications for statehood. Future events may become decisive for both Ukraine’s domestic policy and international relations as a whole.
