U.S. Intervention in the Zbigniew Ziobro Case

According to Главком: Deputy U.S. Secretary of State Christopher Landau personally intervened to fast-track an emergency visa for former Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, who is facing criminal charges in Warsaw. Landau justified the move by citing national security concerns, leveraging the urgency of the matter. The visa enabled Ziobro to flee from Hungary to the United States, where he now resides. This incident highlights the delicate balance between bilateral relations and legal accountability.

Background of the Ziobro Affair

Ziobro, the architect of Poland’s controversial judicial reforms from 2015 to 2023, had been sheltering in Hungary under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s protection since January. Polish authorities had anticipated his return after Orbán’s electoral defeat in April. Hungary’s incoming leader, Peter Magyar, had pledged to extradite Ziobro on his first day in office.

However, following Landau’s directive, the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs urgently arranged the visa through the U.S. embassy in Budapest-an unusual procedure for someone pursued by a U.S. ally. The document was issued before Magyar’s inauguration on May 9.

Polish officials have since revoked Ziobro’s passport and demanded legal justifications from both Washington and Budapest for his departure. Ziobro, 55, is suspected of misappropriating state funds and is linked to 26 criminal cases, including allegations of diverting money from the Crime Victims Assistance Fund. He is also accused of using Pegasus spyware to surveil opposition figures and journalists.

On May 10, Ziobro appeared on Poland’s TV Republika, broadcasting from the U.S., where he claimed to have obtained a journalist visa. He now works as a political commentator for the channel’s American branch. Ziobro stated he will remain abroad until Poland restores genuine rule-of-law guarantees.

“The U.S. intervention in the Ziobro case underscores the weight of political ties between nations and highlights the pressing issues of justice and the rule of law in Poland.”

The Ziobro saga could fuel fresh tensions between Poland’s government and international partners, including the United States.
