US detains tanker with Ukrainians on board: what is known about the allegations

US detains tanker with Ukrainians
У США затримали танкер, на якому були українці: що відомо про звинувачення.

Detention of the Marinera vessel

According to Главком: The US Coast Guard detained the Marinera vessel, formerly known as Bella I, with Ukrainian citizens on board. Ukraine's Ambassador to the US Olga Stefanishyna reported that the Ukrainian side has already provided consular access to its citizens. Furthermore, it has become known that the US plans to bring criminal charges against the crew members of the Bella I tanker.

Operation to control oil exports

According to reports, the detention of the Marinera vessel occurred as part of a broader operation during which other tankers, including Sophia, were also detained. Both vessels last docked in Venezuela, from where they were likely transporting oil. Olga Stefanishyna noted that the Ukrainian embassy is monitoring the situation and taking all necessary measures to establish contact with the Ukrainian citizens on board.

Along with the detention of the Bella I tanker, the US Coast Guard also seized the Olina tanker in the Caribbean Sea near Trinidad. This marked the fifth interception of vessels within the operation to control the export of Venezuelan oil. The Olina tanker, previously known as Minerva M, has been subject to US sanctions for its role in transporting Russian oil and petroleum products from Russian ports in the Baltic, Black Seas, and the Pacific region.

The detention of vessels within this operation illustrates US efforts to control illegal oil exports from Venezuela and restrict the supply of energy resources associated with Russian aggression. In the context of global economic sanctions, this may affect the oil market and international relations, especially in the energy sector, where the US is trying to reduce dependency on Russian resources.
