Insurers have noticed a growing number of patient records reflecting more complex diagnoses without corresponding changes in treatment approaches.

The BCBSA points out that while patient records show heightened disease complexity, the actual care provided has remained largely unchanged. This discrepancy can affect the reimbursement amounts insurers are required to pay hospitals. According to BCBSA,

The New York Times has highlighted these findings as indicators of rising healthcare costs linked to AI technologies. Shiv Rao, founder of the AI startup Abridge, shared insights on the potential ripple effects of AI in this sector. Luke Chalker, BCBSA’s senior vice president, stressed that "insurers currently face significantly tougher challenges." The surge in recorded complex conditions, he explained, has not been matched by changes in patient care, raising concerns among insurers about new hurdles in processing hospital reimbursements.
