Modern constructions are displacing sparrows from Ukrainian cities: an ornithologist's explanation
Sparrows are disappearing in major cities of Ukraine due to a lack of nesting places in new buildings, said ornithologist Hennadiy Fesenko. At the same time, rock pigeons are beginning to occupy new territories and remain quite common in urban parks and green zones.
«As for sparrows, in small settlements, small towns, and villages, there is no noticeable decrease in their numbers. However, in large cities, I can't say exactly how many times, but a decrease is still noticeable,» Fesenko noted.
According to the ornithologist, sparrows have fewer and fewer places to nest due to new constructions, while pigeons actively use the city's green zones for their lives. It is also worth mentioning that pigeons, which previously mostly inhabited natural environments, can now be more frequently found in urban parks.
As a result of research, it has been found that sparrows are disappearing in large cities due to a lack of places to build nests, while pigeons are actively adapting to new living conditions and spreading in urban environments.
