Domestic Violence Prosecutions in Ukraine

There, a 37-year-old man was found guilty of violence against his former wife. After their divorce in 2024, he repeatedly showed up at her apartment, using profanities, insults, intimidation, and threats of physical harm in an effort to pressure her into getting back together.

During the proceedings, the court found that the man had acted aggressively and voiced his determination to win her back. He was under psychiatric observation, yet a forensic psychiatric examination concluded that he was fully aware of his actions and could be held responsible for them. Consequently, the court determined his guilt under Article 126-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and imposed a sentence of one year and six months of restricted liberty.

In addition, the judge applied a preventive measure under Article 91-1 of the Criminal Code, prohibiting the man from writing to his ex-wife or contacting her in any way. According to the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office, the man had already been subjected to administrative responsibility for domestic violence on multiple previous occasions.

Other Acts of Abuse

Elsewhere, in the town of Buryn, Sumy Oblast, a court ordered pretrial detention for a 42-year-old suspect in the brutal beating of a 4-year-old boy, who remains hospitalized in critical condition. Meanwhile, in the Brovary district of Kyiv Oblast, police served a suspicion notice on a 45-year-old man accused of beating his 7-year-old son; the child suffered serious injuries and is under medical supervision.

According to police data released for the first half of 2026, Ukrainian law enforcement received more than 44,000 reports of domestic violence nationwide. Officers filed nearly 35,000 administrative reports and issued over 25,000 emergency restraining orders against offenders.

These events highlight the severity of domestic violence in Ukraine, which continues to be a prominent topic of public discussion. The increase in police reports may reflect greater societal awareness of legal rights and the support services available.

Court decisions in these cases are crucial steps toward protecting victims and deterring potential aggressors.
