A Priest from Lviv Region Who Works Out with His Parishioners: The Story of Oleh Kobel
Priest and Trainer: Oleh Kobel
According to Главком: Father Oleh Kobel, a clergyman at St. George's Church in the village of Dulyby, Lviv region, also serves as a fitness instructor, coaching locals-including members of his own congregation. Beyond his pastoral duties, he is deeply committed to sports and promotes a healthy lifestyle within the community.
Kobel lives in Dulyby, where he leads the parish. In his spare time, he runs training sessions at a gym, specializing in table tennis. Physical activity plays a central role in his life, as he explains:
“I coach table tennis and also run gym sessions for weight loss, muscle gain, or general health. Sports are a huge part of my life.” – Oleh Kobel
Kobel actively encourages his parishioners to join him. “Many of my congregation train with me. A lot of them came to the gym for the first time because they knew their priest was working out. I’m thrilled when I see their progress-like when someone loses weight. One of my parishioners dropped 14 kilograms. I feel I played a part in that by motivating him,” he says.
Spiritual Growth and Connection
In addition to fitness, Kobel focuses on the spiritual well-being of his flock. “Every morning starts with personal prayer at home, then church prayer, liturgy-I do that daily. After liturgy, I have breakfast. If there are no sick confessions, blessings, or consecrations, I head to the gym,” he describes his routine.
The priest highlights the value of interactions with those who exercise alongside him. “My clients try to greet me with ‘Glory to Jesus Christ.’ They never swear or say anything bad around me. For many, it’s unusual. Let’s just say I teach them this, and I take it positively. Between sets, we chat about all sorts of things-spiritual topics or how their day went,” Kobel notes.
Kobel also expresses pride in his community and family: “I’m proud to be an unconventional priest-I love breaking stereotypes, shattering expectations, and surprising people. I’m really happy to have such a parish. I’m proud that people listen to me and accept me for who I am.”
By blending spiritual practice with physical activity, Kobel creates a unique atmosphere in both his parish and gym, fostering not just physical health but also the spiritual well-being of the community.
The example of Father Oleh Kobel shows how religious leaders can positively influence their parishioners’ health and wellness by merging faith with fitness. His initiatives may inspire other priests and communities to encourage active lifestyles and strengthen social bonds through shared activities. This not only boosts physical activity but also reinforces community spirit, creating an environment where everyone can find support and motivation.
