After 40, Brisk Walking and Jogging Prove Most Effective for Strengthening Bones
Examining How Exercise Impacts Bone Health
According to НВ — Техно: Researchers from China conducted a comprehensive review of 124 prior studies involving 18,429 individuals aged 40 and above to identify which types of physical activity best boost bone strength. Their findings revealed that brisk walking and jogging are the most effective exercises for enhancing bone mineral density. Notably, beneficial effects begin to appear at a weekly activity level of 600 MET-minutes, which equates to roughly 2 to 3 hours of exercise.
Key Findings from the Study
The investigation focused on how various exercises influence bone mineral density in specific areas such as the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and hip joints. While the impact of physical activity was moderate, it was sufficient to counteract age-related bone density loss. The improvements were most pronounced in middle-aged participants with a healthy body mass index. In contrast, older adults and those who are overweight or obese experienced less marked benefits.
The study also highlighted that combining aerobic workouts with strength training is associated with positive changes in bone health, although these benefits do not extend uniformly across all skeletal regions. Additionally, a connection was observed between mixed aerobic and mind-body exercises and a reduced risk of fractures. Further research is needed to determine the optimal types and amounts of physical activity for bone health.
To quantify exercise dosage, scientists used MET-minutes, a metric that helps clarify how different activities impact bone strength.
This research emphasizes the critical role of consistent physical activity in maintaining bone health, particularly for middle-aged individuals.
The outcomes offer valuable guidance for developing physical activity recommendations aimed at preventing osteoporosis, a condition of growing concern as populations age. Since fracture risk increases with age, integrating both aerobic and resistance exercises into daily routines can significantly lower these risks, underscoring the importance of an active lifestyle starting early in life.
In addition to physical activity, recent studies suggest that lifestyle modifications may also play a crucial role in promoting overall health and potentially slowing biological aging. Understanding how various factors interact can provide a more comprehensive approach to maintaining well-being as we age.
