Elina Svitolino’s Thoughts Ahead of Her Clash with Iga Swiatek

According to Главком: Ukraine’s top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina, has shared her perspective on the upcoming semifinal battle against Iga Swiatek at the WTA 1000 event in Rome. The match is scheduled for May 14 at 9:30 PM Kyiv time. Seeded seventh, Svitolina has already defeated four opponents to reach this stage:

  • Italy’s Noemi Basiletti
  • Hailey Baptiste of the United States
  • Nikola Bartunkova from the Czech Republic
  • Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan

Svitolina has faced Swiatek six times in her career, winning two of those encounters. Her most recent victory over the Polish star came during the Indian Wells quarterfinals in March 2026. Reflecting on the upcoming match, Svitolina said:

“She (Swiatek) always brings her best tennis on clay. Of course, she has won so many titles here, including Roland Garros. I know her game well, and right now my priority is to recover from yesterday’s match, then review everything with my coach, develop a game plan, and try to execute it as well as possible.”

Other Ukrainian Players at the Tournament

Svitolina is the only Ukrainian woman still competing in Rome’s premier event. The following compatriots have already exited the tournament:

  • Dayana Yastremska
  • Yuliia Starodubtseva
  • Anhelina Kalinina
  • Oleksandra Oliynykova
  • Marta Kostyuk

Kostyuk withdrew due to a hip injury. Despite these setbacks, Svitolina has already secured her spot in the main draw of Roland Garros, which runs from May 24 to June 7.

The upcoming match between Svitolina and Swiatek promises to be intense, as both players bring extensive experience and notable success on clay courts. A win for Svitolina would not only boost her career but also shine a spotlight on Ukrainian tennis internationally-especially given that her fellow countrywomen have already been eliminated. It’s also worth noting that the Rome results could serve as a key indicator of her form heading into the French Open, her next major challenge.

As Svitolina prepares for her crucial match against Swiatek, it's worth noting the impressive performances of other Ukrainian players in Rome. For instance, Oliinykova recently achieved her personal best at the same tournament, showcasing the emerging talent in Ukrainian tennis. This highlights the growing competitiveness of Ukrainian athletes on the international stage, making Svitolina's upcoming showdown even more significant.
