Shakespeare Meets Chernobyl: Ivan Franko Theatre Unveils a Bold New Vision of King Lear

Chernobyl meets Shakespeare on stage
Театр імені Івана Франка презентує свіжий погляд на класичний твір Шекспіра, перенесений у контекст Чернобиля.

Pre-Premiere of 'King Lear! Version' Brings Fresh Perspective

According to Главком: On June 4, the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre hosted a pre-premiere showing of 'King Lear! Version,' directed by Anatoliy Khostikoyev. This production intertwines William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy with stark Ukrainian realities, specifically the story of the village of Stebli, which was engulfed by the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The cast includes three dozen actors, among them members of the director’s own family.

Core Theme and Plot

The central message underscores how power, flattery, and greed can tear a family apart, while genuine love and loyalty often need no grand words. The plot follows the aging King Lear as he decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters. The two eldest shower him with insincere praise, but the youngest, Cordelia, refuses to play along. Enraged, Lear banishes her and hands control to the older sisters, who then humiliate and abandon him. This sets off a tragic chain reaction, leading to Lear losing both his throne and his sanity, and culminating in the deaths of nearly all the main characters.

Director Anatoliy Khostikoyev, who has been with the Franko Theatre since 1980, brings decades of stage experience. His notable past productions include:

  • 'King IV'
  • 'My Profession is a Gentleman from High Society'
  • 'Luxury for Foreigners'
  • 'Incomparable'

'King IV' enjoyed a run of over twenty years on the theatre’s stage. In 'King Lear! Version,' Natalya Sumska plays Tamara, Vyacheslav Khostikoyev takes on the role of Edmund, and Anastasiya Rula appears as Cordelia.

This fresh take on a timeless play marks a significant moment for the country’s theatre scene, especially following last year’s premiere of 'King Lear' at Kyiv’s Left Bank Theatre. 'King Lear! Version' aims not only to adapt a classic text to modern Ukrainian circumstances but also to spotlight ongoing issues related to Chernobyl and its aftermath.

In this way, 'King Lear! Version' both advances Ukrainian theatrical traditions and tackles pressing social concerns that remain relevant today. By reinterpreting a classic through a contemporary lens, the production helps audiences grasp the depth of human relationships and the moral dilemmas at the heart of the play-especially in light of historical traumas like Chernobyl. This performance could spark important conversations about modern values and interpersonal dynamics within Ukrainian society.
