Trump announced negotiations with China on the TikTok deal
US President Donald Trump stated that negotiations with China for a possible TikTok deal will begin early next week. He believes that the deal for the sale of American operations of this program is practically finalized.
“I think we will start on Monday or Tuesday... talks with China, possibly with President Xi or one of his representatives, but we are almost at an agreement,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One.
Such negotiations will occur under the condition of extending the deadline to September 17, by which ByteDance must sell American TikTok assets.
Obstacles to the deal
This spring, a deal to spin off American operations of TikTok into a new company in the US was considered. However, this process was halted due to China's refusal to approve the deal because of Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods.
Trump noted that for the deal to receive approval from China, it is clear that the US will have to take certain steps. About a possible deal with China, he said: “I’m not sure, but I think so. I have a wonderful relationship with President Xi, and that’s probably good for them. I think the deal is good for both the US and China,”
