Trump wants peace with Russia: why the Kremlin is avoiding negotiations
US President Donald Trump has expressed a desire to reach a peace agreement with Russia, but the Russian side is avoiding this. According to a Western official from NBC News, statements by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have caused irritation in the US administration.
'The Russians are simply backing away from their commitments day after day. So it gives the impression that they are being played with, which irritates any president, but especially someone with a nature like President Trump's,' the official said.
Despite this, Washington does not rule out the possibility of reaching a peace agreement. President Trump emphasized that he believes in the possibility of a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, pointing to the lack of a military solution to the problem.
The path to an agreement
After Trump's talks with Putin, Zelensky and European leaders, the chances of achieving a ceasefire remain uncertain. On Thursday, the US president stated that Ukraine is in a defensive position and there is no possibility of defeating Russia.
National security advisors from several countries, along with EU and NATO representatives, are working on a set of measures for Ukraine's security under the leadership of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. They are actively preparing a system of security guarantees for a possible summit between the Ukrainian and Russian leadership.
Ukraine continues to remain in a difficult situation as presidents of various countries ponder paths to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
