Trump and Theophilos III Hold White House Meeting

According to Главком: US President Donald Trump is considering Jerusalem Patriarch Theophilos III as a possible intermediary for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. The two met at the White House for roughly 40 minutes. This move signals an effort to involve religious figures in resolving the ongoing conflict between the two nations.

Theophilos III has not recognized the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which was granted by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2019. The patriarch maintains close ties with the Russian Orthodox Church and is scheduled to meet with Vladimir Putin in June. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, Theophilos III has made statements alleging the oppression of Orthodoxy in Ukraine, reflecting his active stance on the matter.

Trump Receives Honorary Award Amid Broader International Support for Ukraine

During the meeting, Theophilos III bestowed upon Trump the honorary title of Bearer of the Grand Cross of the Order of the Crusaders of the Holy Sepulchre. This gesture underscores the importance of religious ties between the United States and Jerusalem, while also contributing to diplomatic efforts in the face of national and global challenges.

In other international developments, Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron, and Friedrich Merz reaffirmed continued support for Ukraine following talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in London. These efforts highlight the global response to the situation in Ukraine and the international community's push to find pathways to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

This meeting between Trump and Theophilos III underscores the role of religious and diplomatic connections in addressing geopolitical conflicts.

Involving religious leaders in peace negotiations could open new avenues for dialogue, though Theophilos III's position on the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine may pose an obstacle to constructive progress. At the same time, international backing for Ukraine reflects growing global attention to the region's situation and the need for collective action to achieve peace.
