Donald Trump’s Stance on Ukraine’s Strikes Against Russian Oil Refineries

According to ХВИЛЯ: Donald Trump has publicly called for an energy ceasefire following Ukraine’s recent attacks on Russian oil refineries. His advisors claim these Ukrainian strikes aim to undermine Republican prospects in the upcoming U.S. midterm elections. Trump blames these attacks for rising energy prices, although analysts suggest the true concern lies with Iran’s capability to close the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

At the same time, Trump has largely dismissed Russian attacks on Ukraine, including a recent drone strike that killed six people, among them two children. His aides have threatened to halt arms shipments to Ukraine if Kyiv continues targeting Russian diesel plants. The Trump administration has also delayed approval for sending defensive missiles to Ukraine. Additionally, Ukraine’s partial access to the Starshield missile defense system has been cut off, and some Trump advisors have proposed ending intelligence sharing with Kyiv.

Key Events Poised to Influence the Outcome of the Conflict

Concerns are mounting among Ukrainian officials and experts about a potential decline in U.S. support. Within the next eight weeks, three major events could decisively impact Ukraine’s future:

  • The U.S. midterm elections scheduled in two weeks.
  • A summit proposed by Vladimir Putin in November, to be held in Shenzhen, China, during the APEC forum.
  • The G20 summit set for mid-December at Trump’s Miami golf club.

Trump has expressed willingness to attend the Shenzhen meeting.

Putin has suggested a trilateral summit involving Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, initiating the idea during a phone call with Trump on his own birthday-a day when White House aides advised against contacting Putin. The Russian leader seeks a major power dialogue to discuss dividing global influence zones, including Ukraine. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky remains firm against any territorial concessions.

Foreign policy expert Michael Froman warns that cutting off U.S. weapons or intelligence could prolong the war. Trump’s decisions have effectively undermined a sanctions law against Russia, named after Lindsey Graham, who passed away in July. Graham was a vocal Ukraine supporter within Trump’s circle. Both parties predict Democrats may gain control of the House of Representatives in the midterms, while the Senate race remains competitive. The new Congress convenes January 3, leaving Trump with two months of unchecked influence.

One Ukrainian official remarked, 'It feels like all of this is happening without our involvement.'

Another expressed fears that 'this is being treated like a new Yalta conference to carve up spheres of influence.' Trump, on the other hand, downplays Russia’s actions as minimal, while an ally outside the White House suggested Trump could lose focus at any moment but is currently furious with Ukraine and wants to remove Zelensky.

This scenario highlights Ukraine’s growing anxieties about its future amid shifting U.S. political dynamics. As the midterms approach and congressional control hangs in the balance, American support for Ukraine faces uncertainty, adding pressure on Kyiv’s leadership. International gatherings like the APEC and G20 summits could play a pivotal role in shaping the conflict’s trajectory and the global community’s response to Russian aggression.

As tensions rise in the geopolitical landscape, the relationship between Zelensky and Trump becomes increasingly complex. Recent developments regarding U.S. weapon deliveries highlight the stakes involved, particularly with Trump's stance on Russian diesel imports. Understanding this dynamic is crucial as it may influence Ukraine's ability to navigate the challenges ahead.
