Donald Trump’s Tariff Proposal

According to Рубрика — Політика: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested imposing 200% tariffs on both Ukraine and Russia as a strategy to bring an end to their ongoing war. Speaking at a campaign rally in Florida, Trump claimed that his tariff policies previously contributed to ending eight different conflicts, crediting trade restrictions as a key factor in five of those cases.

“If the fighting continues, we’ll slap 200% tariffs on both sides – and surprisingly, that stopped the wars.” – Donald Trump

However, Trump did not specify which countries were involved in those past situations, and also mentioned that the U.S. currently doesn’t import enough from Ukraine or Russia to make such tariffs effective.

Upcoming Negotiations Between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia

In response to Trump’s proposal, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed readiness for trilateral talks involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. Ukrainian officials hope these discussions will take place by early November. Both Moscow and Kyiv have shown openness to resuming dialogue, with Russian President Vladimir Putin indicating willingness to participate.

On October 21, Steve Witkoff, a special envoy representing Trump, met with President Putin in Saint Petersburg for nearly three hours. This meeting followed Witkoff’s talks with Zelensky and leaders from Norway and Finland in Oslo the day before. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine’s involvement in trilateral negotiations depends on Russia’s genuine commitment to dialogue.

Trump also referenced his past experience mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, which he said was achieved by threatening 200% tariffs on their goods. Yet, India disputes Washington’s role, stating the ceasefire was negotiated directly by military leaders without U.S. mediation. This leaves the effectiveness of trade restrictions as a tool for resolving conflicts uncertain.

Trump’s tariff suggestion forms part of his broader foreign policy approach, which advocates leveraging economic measures to tackle international disputes. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s willingness to engage in trilateral talks signals a desire for a diplomatic solution amid escalating tensions. The success of these negotiations will ultimately depend on all parties’ readiness to compromise and engage constructively.

As discussions about Trump's tariff proposal unfold, it's crucial to consider the broader context of ongoing peace negotiations.
