Alcaraz's Injury and Its Consequences

According to Главком: A wrist injury has forced Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz to withdraw from the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona. The injury is more serious than initially anticipated, which will prevent him from reclaiming the world No. 1 ranking. Consequently, Italy's Jannik Sinner will retain the top spot.

Alcaraz recently lost the Monte Carlo final to Jannik Sinner, a defeat that cost him his ATP ranking leadership. He now trails Sinner by 110 points. Sinner, for his part, is skipping the Barcelona tournament week.

A Winning Streak and Recovery

Alcaraz had held the ATP No. 1 ranking since the start of November 2025. In the 2026 season, he secured his first Australian Open title and also won the tournament in Doha. However, his 16-match winning streak was snapped in the semifinals at Indian Wells. Alcaraz stated:

"The injury turned out to be more serious than I expected."

This development leaves the tennis world watching Alcaraz's recovery closely, as he remains one of the leading figures in men's tennis. The timing is particularly unfortunate as the clay-court season, a surface on which he excels, is now underway.

The situation underscores the critical importance of physical fitness and health for elite athletes. Missing Barcelona not only costs Alcaraz a chance to regain the top ranking but could also impact his preparations for other major tournaments. Attention will now shift to Sinner, who has an opportunity to solidify his position at the summit while his rival recuperates.
