Danis Zaripov Takes Part in Hockey Match

According to Главком: Danis Zaripov, a three-time world hockey champion, has been listed on the Myrotvorets website due to his involvement in a hockey game held on February 22, 2026, which featured participants of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The event took place at the Sports Palace in Kazan, celebrating Defender of the Fatherland Day. Zaripov, a Russian hockey player, forward, and former captain of the Ak Bars club, has drawn scrutiny for his participation in this match.

Athletic Achievements and Political Role

Zaripov is a three-time world champion (2008, 2009, 2014) with the Russian national team and the only five-time winner of the Gagarin Cup, securing titles in 2009, 2010, and 2018 with Ak Bars, as well as in 2014 and 2016 with Metallurg. Since September 9, 2024, he has also served as a deputy in the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan and holds the title of Honored Master of Sports of Russia, awarded in 2009. For context, the Myrotvorets database is a controversial Ukrainian website that lists individuals deemed to be threats to national security, often including those linked to pro-Russian activities.

Separately, reports have emerged about the elimination of Russian occupier Georgy Kamalov, who died at age 46. Kamalov played for the Era Vladivostok team from 2003 to 2011, later ending his playing career due to injury and transitioning to coaching. He began his coaching work within the Era system and in recent years worked with the football club Anri, leading it to the level of the Russian Cup.

"He was up to his ears in debt. That's why he signed a contract. He paid it off after receiving the payout. But then he had to go fight. And die. At 46 years old. Such is the grim reality."

Meanwhile, Russian propaganda outlets have not disclosed the date or details of Kamalov's elimination, raising further questions about his involvement in armed conflicts.

The participation of sports figures in events tied to military conflicts highlights the close link between sports and the country's political landscape. Zaripov's inclusion in the Myrotvorets database could carry not only personal but also broad socio-political consequences, as it underscores the stance of the sports community regarding the war in Ukraine. The elimination of Georgy Kamalov, in turn, raises concerns about former athletes becoming involved in military actions, an issue that grows increasingly relevant in the context of modern conflicts.
