Turkey Clarifies Why Russian S-400s Were Not Used to Intercept Iranian Missiles

Explanation of Turkish interception of Iranian missiles
Туреч authorities пояснили, чому російські системи С-400 не були задіяні для перехоплення іранських ракет.

Statement from the Turkish Ministry of Defense

According to Главком: The Turkish Ministry of Defense has explained that Russian-made S-400 air defense systems were not activated during the recent interception of Iranian ballistic missiles. The reason, it stated, is that Turkey operates as part of NATO's integrated air and missile defense network. This alliance-wide system is designed to automatically select the most effective assets available to neutralize any incoming threat.

NATO's Integrated Air and Missile Defense System

NATO's defensive shield is composed of several key components:

  • Early warning sensors,
  • Command and control systems,
  • Interceptor missiles.

When a ballistic missile is detected, the rapid response system identifies the most suitable and fastest means to destroy it.

“When a ballistic missile is detected, the system automatically selects the most appropriate and fastest interception asset and executes the launch within a very short reaction time,” the Turkish Defense Ministry noted.

During the recent attack, the most appropriate and effective defensive assets were engaged, resulting in the successful destruction of the missiles. This incident highlights the complex geopolitical landscape where a NATO member, Turkey, also possesses advanced Russian military hardware. In response to the interception of the Iranian-launched ballistic missile, NATO has further reinforced its missile defense posture.

“The Alliance’s ballistic missile defense systems reacted quickly and effectively,” confirmed Colonel Martin O'Donnell, Spokesperson for NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE).

This event underscores the critical importance of collective security within NATO and the operational effectiveness of its integrated defense systems, which enable member states to respond swiftly to external threats. While the Iranian missile attack represents a serious challenge to regional stability, NATO's rapid and coordinated response demonstrates the alliance's readiness to defend its members in critical situations.
