The British company Cambridge Atomworks has begun experimental testing of the mobile molten salt reactor ODIN in a new laboratory-manufacturing zone. This reactor uses a molten salt coolant instead of high-pressure water, allowing for the removal of heavy and expensive protective casings. The nuclear fuel in the ODIN system is placed in a single physical block together with a neutron moderator, and the passive safety systems use the surrounding air for natural cooling.

Advantages of the ODIN reactor

The station has significant advantages:

  • does not require water intake from rivers or lakes;
  • can operate in deserts;
  • natural convection ensures the pumping of molten salts in case of a power outage;
  • air flows dissipate residual heat through the walls.

In the Cambridge Atomworks laboratory, STA-MS mass spectrometry is used to study the properties of the coolant, as well as to test alloys for corrosion resistance. Physical testing benches provide measurements to verify the accuracy of digital models.

The company's director, Ian Farnan, noted: 'The new assembly hall will give us space to build demonstration stands, and the chemical complex will provide an analytical platform to accelerate the development of the ODIN reactor.'
