In the Heart of Lviv, Semkiv Unveils 'Truth' Sculpture Featuring a Striking Black Element
У центрі Львова, Семків представляє скульптуру 'Істина', доповнену вражаючим чорним елементом.

The 'Truth' Sculpture in Lviv

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: A new wooden sculpture titled 'Truth' by artist Volodymyr Semkiv has been installed in central Lviv. This distinctive piece is marked by a long black structure that pierces through the face and extends beyond its boundaries. The sculpture embodies the painful nature of speaking truth openly. Positioned at approximately human height, the black element might be less visible during nighttime. Semkiv’s work often tackles social themes, and in 'Truth,' he reinterprets the phrase 'a lump in the throat' as a rough wooden log blocking the flow of words.

Additional Art Installations in Lviv

In the autumn of 2026, Lviv also showcased another of Semkiv’s sculptures called 'Clenched,' alongside works by other artists, including:

  • 'Totem' by Oleksiy Abramov
  • 'Heavenly Well' and 'Hoverla' by Serhiy Radko

On August 24, 2026, ahead of Ukraine’s Independence Day, the 'Columns of Memory' were inaugurated at Angels Square in Lviv. This memorial installation bears more than 2,000 names of soldiers who died defending Ukraine and are buried within the Lviv community. The list of names on the monument will continue to grow.

Additionally, on November 5, 2026, near Khmilnyk in the Vinnytsia region, the 'Strength of the Clan' sculpture was unveiled. This composition features five bison figures and stands as the largest single-location sculpture ensemble in Ukraine.

"Truth is always painful. This stake driven into the throat speaks to the press, free thinkers, and artists who can’t always do what they wish." Pavlo Hudymov

The installation of Semkiv’s 'Truth' highlights the significance of social issues and transparency in society. The artwork sparks conversations about the nature of truth and how it is perceived, earning the artist recognition among peers and the public alike. Other cultural projects in Lviv, such as the 'Columns of Memory,' emphasize remembrance and honoring the fallen, reflecting the city’s vibrant cultural scene and its engagement with contemporary challenges. These initiatives help shape a cultural environment that honors Ukraine’s history, identity, and social values.

As Lviv continues to embrace contemporary art, the recent relocation of the interactive exhibit 'That Day' serves as a poignant reminder of the city's commitment to cultural dialogue. This initiative not only raises significant funds for Ukrainian museums but also fosters community engagement, much like Semkiv's 'Truth' sculpture, which challenges societal narratives through its powerful imagery.
