Chernivtsi Launches City's First Free Inclusive Playground in Shevchenko Park
Introducing Chernivtsi's First Inclusive Playground
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Chernivtsi has unveiled its inaugural fully inclusive, free-to-use public playground located in Taras Shevchenko Park. Designed with specialized equipment, this playground enables children of all abilities to play together seamlessly. Mayor Roman Klichuk emphasized the importance of creating a barrier-free environment where kids can enjoy themselves and parents can feel confident that their children's needs are thoughtfully addressed.
Playground Features
The facility includes:
- a carousel accessible to children using wheelchairs;
- an inclusive sandbox;
- various swings;
- a playhouse fitted with tactile and educational panels.
This initiative was brought to life through the 'Initiative' public projects competition, with playground equipment funded by the city budget. The local municipal enterprise, the Taras Shevchenko Center for Culture and Leisure, handled site preparation and landscaping.
According to Chernivtsi City Council, the total investment for this project amounted to 558,000 hryvnias. Of this, 300,000 hryvnias came from community grant funds, while the remaining 258,000 hryvnias were contributed by the municipal enterprise. This playground marks a pioneering effort in Chernivtsi focused explicitly on inclusive play.
For context, similar inclusive playgrounds have been established in other Ukrainian cities. Bucha opened its first playground following British inclusive standards on World Mental Health and Inclusion Days. Vinnytsia introduced an inclusive playground at Lyceum No. 4 tailored for children with special educational needs. Additionally, the Lviv community is preparing to launch a unique Monstrum-branded playground as part of the 'Children's Homes 2' project.
The launch of Chernivtsi's inclusive playground represents a significant advancement toward equal play opportunities for children with diverse needs, reflecting growing community dedication to inclusion and support for children with disabilities.
Projects like this not only enhance children's quality of life but also foster social interaction and development, providing vital spaces where all children can connect and grow together.
As Chernivtsi takes a significant step towards inclusivity with its new playground, it is worth noting that other Ukrainian cities are also making strides in creating safe and supportive environments for children. For example, Zaporizhzhia has recently opened the country’s first underground preschool, designed to provide a secure learning space for 115 children, including those with special needs. This growing trend highlights the importance of accessible facilities for all children across Ukraine.
