Mine Safety Teams Deployed in Kharkiv Region

According to ХВИЛЯ: With support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), ten new mobile mine safety teams are being deployed in Ukraine's Kharkiv region. These units will focus on non-technical surveys of land and on mine safety education. The teams consist of 40 personnel, primarily veterans of the war and their family members. All participants have received official one-year contracts with the state-owned company Ukroboronservis.

The new units will concentrate their efforts in Kharkiv Oblast, which has recorded over 30% of all civilian detonation incidents in Ukraine. Since the full-scale invasion began, 430 people in the region have been injured by explosive ordnance, accounting for more than 30% of the national total. The ten teams will work directly within local communities to enhance the safety of residents. The scale of contamination in this northeastern border region, which has seen intense fighting, makes such efforts critical.

Program Preparation and Implementation

The teams underwent a three-week training program, where they studied the theory of mine action and international standards, gained practical skills in using digital survey tools, and learned methods for informing civilians about risks. The UNDP in Ukraine is implementing the program with financial backing from the Netherlands and Luxembourg. The Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Veterans Affairs are partners in this initiative.

The deployment of mobile mine safety teams in the Kharkiv region is a crucial step in mitigating the war's aftermath and protecting civilians. Given the high rate of explosions and significant number of casualties, such initiatives can substantially reduce risks and aid in clearing areas of explosive hazards. The program's implementation with support from international partners also underscores the importance of cooperation in addressing the humanitarian consequences of the conflict.
